10/8/90

I guess I’ll write in this while I wait for my chance to order dinner. I’m in Prague. Billy and Rich are on their way to Vienna and maybe then, Gyor.

O.K., I ordered. (I’m in a restaurant that serves food after 9:00pm! I don’t care that it takes 25 minutes to get a waiter’s attention.)

I have some catching up to do.

(10/4/90) I went out that night to a disco. Watched the people there dance 70′s style to all sorts of different music. From Sinead O’Connor to Pink Floyd and Queen. I bought 2 vodka + orange juice and just watched. The last bus leaves from the metro station at 12:32. I got off the metro station at 12:25 and got lost. At exactly 12:32 I found the bus and jumped on just as the doors closed. If I had missed it I would have had to wait 3 hours for the next one. But I made it.

(10/5/90) So, I slept in.

Found a girl who teaches english (from California). She took us to a place to get gyros – pretty good. Also she told us that U2 is coming to Prague on 10/21. Big news but she seemed a little unsure and I haven’t heard that U2 is touring. So she said she could confirm it that night at the American Embassy – there was to be a party there.

Then we went to Charles Bridge. It really is beautiful – if you can see it through the tourists. There are vendors selling everything there too. Rich bought a great crystal whiskey set for 300 dreadlocks ($13.00). I think it was stolen or something – things are cheap, but not that cheap.

Then we found out that Joe Cocker is going to play for free on Sunday night and that some lesser stars were going to play on Saturday night. Fun.

We went back to the place – with no hard money – and Dr. Apartment Owner was there. We told him we only had dreadlocks and that we’ll leave if he didn’t want them. He took 1,500 total for all three of us for Friday, Saturday and Sunday night and Monday and Tuesday night of me. Great! (About 6-7 dollars each per night.)

We rested and then left to eat – good dinner – dumplings and meat in gravy. Rich didn’t like it.

Then we left for the embassy. Stupid party there and the girl still only said that the U2 rumor was only that – a rumor. So we left.

Went to a disco. Had a few too many and found out the metro closed while we were there. So we took a cab – 300 dreadlocks. (5 dollars each)

OK. I’ve left the restaurant – cost 81 dreadlocks – $3.80 or so. I’m waiting for a bus to go back to the flat so I don’t know how much I’ll be able to write.

None. I’m on the bus now.

(10/6/1990) On Sat., 10/6, we slept in. I got up first at about 11:30, showered, got dressed and was sitting there quietly when Billy said, “I thought we were going to sleep in!”. Kinda mad. I said, “I did – it’s after 12:00.” He was surprised.

So they got up slowly got ready and we headed for the castles – there are a whole bunch here just 30 minutes away – we got to the bus station but couldn’t figure out which bus to take and it was already 3:30 so we went to the bridge again and then to the place that the music was supposed to happen later that day.

That’s where we met Don. He is a very friendly person who meets everybody. We hung out with Don and his friend Brian for the rest of the night.

We also met some girls – locals – sat with them for awhile.

We were in a square – Starometska – to see the bands surrounded by old churches and buildings.

I’ve never seen such a spectacular setting for a concert. San Francisco was on the right, Transylvania in front behind the stage, a 10th century building left front and a church who’s bell is rung by a skeleton every hour.

So we listened to Czech, Italian and other music people. Some runners from Paris to Prague came. It was a fest!

We ate, walked around and at about 10:00 decided to leave. But I looked up on the stage and saw Joe Cocker walking around! So we stayed. He did a sound check and sang 5 songs to about 200 people. Great Great Great time! I really like Joe Cocker.

My hand is doing strange things – I can’t write. It keeps jerking in strange directions. Hmmm. (It’s 10/9 now about 2:00. I am at a restaurant.)

(10/7/90) Then on 10/7, Sunday, I got up at about 9:00, showered, dressed and left a note that I’d meet Billy and Rich at 4:00 at the square.

I shopped and looked around – found a back alley that had been roped off and an alternative artists gallery set up. Industrial music played and the pictures were great. I wanted to buy a painting but 10,000 dreadlocks is too much for a budget traveler.

So I found Billy and Rich, Don and Bryan (Don bought a piece of art – a tapestry like thing – 6,000 dreadlocks) and we sat around with a bunch of local kids. One guy had his son there – little kid (boy) with a pierced ear. Cute kid but he drank all of my Pepsi.

Joe Cocker sang the same songs as the night before. Good – but not as good as the night before.

(10/8/1990) Next day – it’s 10/9 as I write this.

We got up at 10:00 – well Rich and Billy did – I had already showered – and left to get our Hungarian visas. Rich and Billy got theirs back while I was filling out the form (only one pen) and the it took 1/2 hour to get mine. They left in the meantime to go pack and get ready to leave for Vienna.

While I was waiting the tall gorgeous girl with the blue blue eyes started talking to me. We ended up going to see a great view of Prague together (and her friend Jenny).

She was leaving for Innsbruck that night – I wanted to get to know her better but I had to get back to our flat so Rich and Billy would take some stuff back to Hungary for me. I almost went to Innsbruck again to maybe run into her. Her name was Megan Meyer – she’s coming to Salt Lake this year and promised to look me up. I like tall blonds.

I saw the other two off and then went shopping and looking for Megan.

I came back to the flat and was relaxing – the first time in 6 weeks that I’ve been completely by myself and I was enjoying it. Then the buzzer at the door buzzed. It was the nice, kinda smelly man who rented the flat to us. He said that I could stay and asked if he could sleep here too. He tried to speak to me for 2 hours – I just nodded my head and say “oh?”, “yes”, and “Hmmm” – never understanding a word.

So I left.

Ate at the restaurant I mentioned a few pages back – interesting thing about that restaurant: Pizza Pizza is written all over the inside and outside but when asked if they serve pizza the waiters say “NO!” and look puzzled at the question.

10/4/1990 Prague

We left the riot and got on the 12:20 train bound for Budapest – through Prague, and got off in Prague. We didn’t buy tickets, we thought we’d wait and buy them from the conductor along with our seat reservation. We got on the couchette car becasue the conductor seemed to tell us to. He was from Romania – I guess the train eventually goes to Bucharest – and he was weird. he didn’t seem to get it that we wanted to buy tickets. the train left before we bought tickets and we were in a couchette car without a reservation.

When he came to check out tickets, i held up my hands, gave him 40 marks ($23) and my student id. He held up three fingers and pointed at Rich and Billy. I nodded yes. Then he took billy and rich’s i.d.s and left. so, we didn’t get a ticket, but we got a train ride to Prague for a total of $23 dollars.

I hate this pen.

He gave us back the i.d.s in the morning and held his fingers to his lips and said, “shhhh”.

A guy saw us at the train station. he told us that he had a flat for 35 marks. We said yes and he took us to get change, paid for the bus, and to his flat. We discovered that he wanted marks for each night we stay but we’re out now, so we might have to move tomorrow.

We slept then.

Went to eat at the restaurant down the street. Got an egg on a steak?? and 3 pepsi and coffee mud for $3.50 – 268 thingers total bill for all of us.

Then we went to town. the bus costs 1 thinger ($0.04) and we got a beer for 3 thingers ($0.13). We mailed a bunch of post cards – I did anyway – for 5 thingers each. I hope they get there.

Rich and I might go out again tonight. If we do I’ll let you know. Who you are is a good question.

9/25/90 – Gyor, Hungary

Alright, the next day I wok up at about 9:00. Started breakfast – bread and cheese and butter. The phone rang – it was happy Hajni Varga telling me she’d meet me at the Deli train station if I left here before 2:00. I shaved off my beard – I look really young now – piddled around and left for the train station at about 12:00. The train left at 1:45 so I found a sunny place near there and read ‘A Gift of Wings’ by Richard Bach. Started it anyway. (Good book)

*Note to self: I will one day own a light airplane and be able to fly it well.*

Got on the train.

Everyone met me in Budapest. They’d just got back from an extensive tour of the interesting things there – something I would have like, they didn’t as much, I think. Then we went to Marika, Joseph and Rita’s house. They are related to Rich somehow and are very rich. Fed us much food.

Joseph is really cool. He showed us his junk collection which included a 16,000,000 yeal old fossel and a 1,000,000 year old thigh bone from a mammoth.

Then we put on WWII helmets and shot a pellet pistol.

The next door neighbor won the under 14 European Doubles championship and is going to America this year. He might be famous one day. We took his dog for a walk in the nearby mountains with his brother and saw a great view of Budapest at night.

Then they took us to

WOW! I get bored writing in this. This happened, then this, then some more. I want to remember it all but it’s like one of those slide show presentations that you have to sit through. And I don’t think reading it later will be much better. I need to write more thoughts and feelings and ideas and less travel trivia. I don’t know. Maybe if I have all the facts down I’ll remember the feelings – it wouldn’t work the other way around. So, I guess it’s either boring reading that may conjure up good memories or fun reading that would mean something – or I could do both but that’s a lot of writing. I’ll try that.

Then they took us to our ‘sleeping house’ as Hajni called it. Billy and Rich kept me up for a long time so they could play chess. (The light was on – Brett was in a different room.) I got pissed but quickly got over it the next day.

Joseph came in his small Russian communist car to pick us up. Brett, Billy, Rich, Hajni, Joseph and me all got in the small car. And it’s against the law to have 6 people in a car – even a bigger car. So, Hajni sat on the floor and Joseph put a blanket on her. She kept saying “I am your package.” I laughed so hard. She is a great lady. I think my pen is blowing up. Maybe not.

We went shopping, ate at a restaurant – the waiter tried to memorize our orders and got it all wrong. I’m on a train to Innsbruck no. It’s bumpy. We didn’t let Hajni buy Rob a leather jacket because they were so expensive. She got mad, I think.

9/16/2010

Rich and Billy go home at about 3:00am with Poppa yelling at them because he had to let them in.

We checked out at about 11:30, took our bags to the train station (1,500 Lire – $1.35), then went shopping. I almost bought a leather jacket again – did buy a bracelet. (Still don’t know if I like it.)

Then we went back to the train station to get our bags and saw Rafael just standing there with his girlfriend Daniel. “We were so surprise!”

He waited with us for our train to Venice while we waited he suggested that we go to Torino with him and stay and have a nice supper. We went.

That night we had a big, big dinner at about 1:00am and drank beer and laughed and went to bed at about 4:00am. 3 of us in one bed and 2 in a very small single bed – Brett kicked Rich out by the end of the night.

Rafael had to go to work at 8:30 (his train left at 7:30). He was late. We got up at 11:30. Still no good sleep because the mattress was bumpy and I had my clothes on.

"The Trevi Fountain" (detail)

9/15/1990

The Next day (9/13) in Rome we went to the sights listed in the other people’s diary – Pantheon, Trevi Fountain (both under construction) – saw the Discus thrower, that church that leans and the statues looking scared below it. Brett and Rich got $7.00 ice cream cones then tried to see the Bernini Statues at the Musee D’art Modern but it was closed so Billy, Brett and Rich swam in a nearby fountain with no clothes.

I didn’t feel like getting wet and didn’t think I needed to prove anything – so I didn’t swim in the fountain naked.

We went home (back to the hotel), ate, and ‘the rest’ got drunk. I didn’t. They messed up the room, made gross noises, tried to make each other sick – I think Brett threw up in the waste basket – and were generally obnoxious. I don’t want to drink anymore, if that is how I am.

We got up the next day, checked out, got our Hungarian Visa, and the got on the train to Florence.

Found a nice mom & pop hotel with a long hall (we’re at the end of it). 20,000 lire a piece ($18). Did nothing but walk the streets that afternoon. At night we went to the Be Bop night club – watched a guitar/singer and a saxophonist ruin some good songs. I had a Long Island Ice Tea, Strawberry Daiquiri, and two beers. Billy and rich had more. Billy got sick so Brett and I took him back – Brett stayed and I went back for Rich. No girls. We walked back. Rich got 3 bags of potato chips. We saw a fender bender then went to our hotel room. the pop glared at us with his long underwear as we closed the door. Ciao, we said.

I went to sleep. Rich threw up the chips.

Next day (today) we saw M.’s The David. Immense. I really liked the unfinished slaves, too. They looked like they were trying to escape from the rock. Billy and Rich went to Piza to see – yes, you guessed it – the leaning tower. Brett and I shopped. I almost got a leather jacketĀ  – would have, but they didn’t have my size. The first price was lire 160,000 ($144) – probably could have talked down to lire 100,000 ($90). We went to Be Bop again. Saw a better band but still not good – I had a kamikazee, yum and a beer. Total $9.00. Billy and Rich are gone to a disco looking for girls. I tired.
